Those texts had an important role in the creation and dissemination of a widespread notion of ''America'' as a political metaphor. The analysis shows how these perceptions had created an ambivalent and complex American socialist imagery that balanced between utopia and critique which metaphorically corresponded with the self-perception of Yugoslavia in the different phases of Yugoslav socialism.
