Culture and the arts were supposed to be bonds in the ethnically and religiously heterogeneous Monarchy. The Viennese historicism and stylistic restoration, and later on modern conservation played that role. Francis Joseph I of Austria, as well as the heir presumptive to the Austro- Hungarian throne Archduke Francis Ferdinand played an important role in the protection of historic monuments.
