Material type: ArticleArticlePublisher: 2015Other title: Publishing Croatian scientific journals: to e- or not to e-? [Naslov na engleskom:].Subject(s): znanstveni časopisi - Hrvatska | elektroničko izdavaštvo | Hrčak | 5.04 | Croatia; electronic publishing; Hrčak portal; scientific journals | Croatia; electronic publishing; Hrčak portal; scientific journalsOnline resources: Elektronička verzija In: International conference on publishing trends and contexts (2 ; 2014 ; Pula)Summary: In the electronic environment publishing is easier – once copyedited, material can be published online in a few clicks. But there are many other possibilities and advantages of e-publishing, e. g. linking to other digital documents ; connecting documents with their newer (or older) versions ; publishing in various formats ; using identifiers ; interaction with peer-reviewers and/or readers etc. In this presentation, examples of several e- journals that use those advantages will be given. The aim of the study was to analyse Croatian scientific journals to find out if their publishers publish e-versions of printed issues or add new value and content to their e-journals. A sample of more than 100 Croatian journals was analysed on journal and article level. On the journal level, data about the use of automated publishing systems and identifiers were gathered ; on the article level, the use of links and new formats was analysed. Research method was comparative content analysis. All the journals publish articles in PDF format. Approximately one fourth of the journals use Open Journal Systems. About 90 journals publish active links to author’s e-mail addresses and about 60 journals publish active links to online sources in the reference lists (although links in some journals are incorrect). Only one journal publishes links in the text (links to other documents and links to figures or tables in higher resolution). In spite of a significant number of Croatian scientific e- journals, they are static and imitate their printed versions. Possible reasons for such a practice will be discussed and further studies will be proposed.
